While two-handed shooting may be the preferable option, it won’t always be available to you in dangerous situations. One-handed shooting takes time and practice to perfect, but it’s a highly valuable skill to have. You never know when you will need it, and it’s always best to be prepared for a wide range of scenarios. The last thing you want is to be powerless against an oncoming threat. Being equipped doesn’t refer solely to owning a proper weapon, but being able to use it in a variety of ways. Here are our top two reasons we practice one-handed shooting:

A Two-Handed Grip Isn’t Always Possible

In a precarious situation, you may need to use one hand for another purpose. Let’s say you are not in a well-lit environment and you need to use a flashlight. What if your right hand is injured, and that’s your dominant hand? Perhaps you need to use your other hand to protect a child, call for help or block off an area. Our hands are our most valuable tools as human beings, and we need them to multi-task. A two-handed grip isn’t always going to be an option, so it’s a good idea to hone your one-handed shooting skills. This also means you’ll need to practice with both hands to become proficient.

A few different one-handed shooting grips include:

  • Straight arm.  Move your foot (the foot on the same side from which you are shooting) towards your target and place most of your weight on it. Then, as the name suggests, send your arm out straight and aim.
  • Canted. Again, start with the straight arm approach and adjust by tilting the gun towards you just slightly. This can help offset recoil. While it doesn’t work for everyone, it’s worth testing out to see if it’s right for you.

It’s Standard Protocol for Those Who Carry Firearms on the Job

Did you know that one-handed shooting is a required skill for the FBI Qualification test? Potential FBI employees also have to be able to use dominant and non-dominant hands in order to pass. Many police forces and military sectors also require one-handed shooting. It’s not too difficult to understand why: professionals in the field encounter extremely hazardous and complex events daily, and it’s their job to be able to respond quickly and efficiently. If experts prioritize this skill, then it’s definitely worth learning.
