The new year is here! New Year’s resolutions are great for self-improvement and personal goals, and they can extend into hobbies too. As such, we have a few shooting goals to keep in mind for the new year!
Learn to Clean Your Gun
When is the last time you cleaned and relubricated your firearm? Locate your physical manual or search for it from the manufacter online, and you should be able to find a recommended round count in between cleanings. If you’ve exceeded the recommendation, your firearm may be more prone malfunctions and small issues may turn into major ones. Make it a priority to learn how to clean your firearm this year. As a bonus, it is sure to enhance your understanding of how your weapon works.
If you’d like to learn how to clean your pistol in a classroom setting with fellow hobbyists, check out our Pistol Maintenance course! It’s only 25 bucks and comes with a pistol cleaning kit to set you up for future cleanings.
Purchase a Safe
We highly recommend having some sort of safe to store your firearms at home. You never know when theft or a tragic accident may take place, and a safe can prevent these situations most of the time. Moreover, Maryland law states anyone under 16 can not have access to a firearm. So, make it a priority to at least purchase a quick access safe in 2022. With a quick access safe, you can be sure that your firearm is secure yet easy to access in case of an emergency. Besides storing your pistol, it also makes sense to be fully prepared with a spare magazine, a flashlight, and a knife.
Start Dryfire Training
You don’t always have to go to the range to get in firearms training. Dry fire practice is an excellent way to concentrate on foundational skills, save money on ammo, and get in some training without leaving home. Ensure your weapon is cleared and unable to fire and try out some of these drills in 2022:
- Presentation from holster
- Target transitioning
- Dry fire reloading
Bonus tip: You’ll want to purchase snap caps of the appropriate ammo size to get full functionality (minus firing) out of your firearm when practicing at home.
Try a Different Type of Firearm
If you enjoy shooting one type of gun, try expanding your horizons in 2022 to see if there are any other types you enjoy! Maybe this is the year to get into AR-15 shooting if you feel confident with your pistol, or vice versa. If you’d prefer to stick to a tried and true firearm type, you could always mix up the caliber as well.
