Our mission at Soteria is to prepare our trainees to react appropriately and with precision when facing potentially life-threatening situations. While training firearm skills is one way to increase preparedness, it’s worth keeping in mind that expert level shooting skills are only part of the full picture when it comes to staying safe from harm. First aid skills are even more important, which is why we include Stop The Bleed training and certification in our Ultimate CCW package. Here are a few stats that illustrate the importance of developing a baseline of first aid skills.
Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable deaths from trauma. Roughly 40% of trauma related deaths worldwide occur due to major bleeding. This doesn’t come as a surprise when considering the vast array of incidents that can cause traumatic blood loss. Car accidents, impalement, falls, explosions, and crush injuries can be just as serious as wounds sustained in a gunfight, and the same lifesaving skills often apply.
Regardless of the cause of injury, the average bleed out time is 3-5 minutes for traumatic blood loss and the average 911 response time is between 7-10 minutes. When every second counts, immediate responders are often the ones tasked with taking lifesaving action.
You are legally protected under Good Samaritan Law. Many people are reluctant to lend a hand in emergency situations out of fear that they will get tied up in a personal injury lawsuit. In our various classroom courses, we always make sure our trainees understand Good Samaritan laws. Essentially, those who operate under good faith and without gross negligence or intentional misconduct are safe from penalty resulting from first aid intervention.
Immediate CPR can double or triple the chance of survival for those suffering from cardiac arrest. If immediate action is not taken, the situation can become dire before emergency services arrive to take over. That’s a scary fact to consider when cardiac arrest occurs right at home 70% of the time, and 10,000 cardiac arrest incidents occur in the workplace per year. By taking the time to prepare for these emergencies, we’re empowering ourselves to do everything possible to keep our loved ones, colleagues, and even strangers safe.
