When looking for a semi-automatic rifle, two of the most popular choices you’ll encounter are the AR-15 and the AK-47. While both of them are used by the police and the military, and both of them can be used for hunting and self-defense, there are key differences that might make one a better fit for you than another. Here are some of the ways to decide if an AR-15 or AK-47 is right for you.

Weight: AR-15 or AK-47

With an empty magazine, the average AK-47 is about 8.5 lbs. However, the AR-15 with an empty magazine in the default configuration is only about 6.5 lbs. While a two pound difference might not seem like much if you are only taking your AR-15 or AK-47 with you to the gun range, that can add up if you are hunting and walking around quite a bit from spot to spot. If you care about the lightest weight, the AR-15 is a better bet.

Firepower

This question is pretty straightforward, as the AK-47 rounds are indisputably more powerful than AR-15 rounds. While there are ways to balance out the firepower, like hollow-point rounds in your AR-15, if firepower is your primary goal, the AK-47 is a perfect choice.

Accuracy

Accuracy is critical for purchasing any weapon, whether you are looking to purchase an AR-15 or AK-47. AK-47s are not always known for their accuracy, but that can be a function of the ammo being used and the distance from the target. Semi-automatic AK-47s have a range of up to 300 or 400 yards depending on your accuracy. In contrast, AR-15s are more accurate and have a range of up to 600 yards. When accuracy is your priority, the AR-15 is a better option.

Reliability

Depending on what situations you are planning on using your gun in, performance in the rain, sleet, snow, and dirt might be most important to you. AK-47s were specifically designed to be used in a comprehensive range of situations, from sub-zero temperatures to mud puddles. The reliability of the AK-47 cannot be beaten by the AR-15.
